Did you know that we are third-generation farmers?

It all started with Peter Warmerdam, a Dutch immigrant who came to Canada in search of happiness and opportunity after World War 2. He grew up in Sassenheim NL, the largest tulip bulb producing area in the world (shown in the second photo).

Fun fact! This town is where Claude Monet created his famous tulip field painting in 1886, showing the incredible beauty of the area.

Peter eventually settled on the Semá:th (Sumas) Flats and shared his love of flower farming with his family, many of whom continue to grow flowers to this day. While you're strolling through the tulips, keep an eye out for the single white tulips that is named in his honour. 💐

Today brings BC’s Heritage Week, which encouraged us to share our history.

For millennia, a vast lake existed between Sumas Territory and the Vedder Mountains in the unceded territory of the Stó:lō People, in what is known as the Fraser Valley. Teeming with ecological abundance, Semá:th Xó:tsa (Sumas Lake) was central to the cultural, spiritual, and physical well-being of the Séma:th people (Sumas First Nation).

Between 1919 and 1924, settlers in the region lobbied the government to drain the lake, thereby enhancing the agricultural capacity of the region with devastating consequences for Stó:lō people.

We are located on this land. When the devastating Abbotsford floods occurred in 2021, we were reminded of the fertility of this soil and the stories this region carries.

This is how we named our farm...Lakeland.
